Police in Nsanje have launched an investigation to trace individuals suspected of killing a 27-year-old man on the night of November 8.
Nsanje Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Jabulani Ng’oma, confirmed the development, identifying the deceased as Sabudu Bonjesi.
According to Ng’oma, Bonjesi’s body was found lifeless that same night near Kapalakonje Primary School in the area of Traditional Authority Malemia in Nsanje District.
Reports indicate that Bonjesi’s brother, Patrick Bonjesi, from Mbenje Village in the area of Traditional Authority Ngabu, was the one who reported the incident to the police.
Ng’oma said preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased had a criminal record and was known in the area for being involved in various theft related incidents.
On the night of the incident, Sabudu Bonjesi was reportedly seen roaming around late at night before being apprehended by some members of the community.
The suspects allegedly started assaulting him, beating him severely until he died at the scene.
Police officers later visited the crime scene and took the body to Nsanje District Hospital, where it was confirmed dead upon arrival.
Law enforcers have since condemned the incident, describing it as an act of mob justice that violates the law and human rights.
“We strongly condemn the tendency of taking the law into one’s own hands,” said Ng’oma, urging community members to report suspected criminals to the police instead.
He stressed that only the police and the courts have the legal authority to investigate and prosecute criminal offenses.
Ng’oma concluded by appealing for calm in the area, assuring residents that police are working tirelessly to bring all those responsible for the killing of Sabudu Bonjesi to justice.
