President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has appealed to the World Bank to continue supporting Malawi in various development sectors as the country works to rebuild and strengthen its economy.

Speaking at Mtunthama State House in Lilongwe, Mutharika said the government remains committed to working closely with development partners to address economic challenges and restore stability.

The President noted that Malawi is facing multiple pressures, including fuel shortages, food insecurity and limited access to farm inputs such as fertilizer, all of which require urgent attention and coordinated action.

“We are asking our partners, particularly the World Bank, to help us find sustainable solutions to these challenges. Our focus is on ensuring that the economy recovers and that citizens have access to basic needs,” said Mutharika.

He emphasized that his administration is implementing reforms to promote transparency, efficiency and accountability in public institutions as part of efforts to attract and retain international support.

“Good governance and sound economic management remain at the core of our national development agenda,” Mutharika added, assuring the World Bank delegation of Malawi’s commitment to responsible leadership.

In response, the World Bank’s Vice President for Eastern and Southern Africa, Mr. Ndiame Diop, reaffirmed the Bank’s continued support to Malawi, describing the country as a key partner in the region.

Diop said the World Bank is aware of the economic challenges Malawi is facing and is ready to assist in programs aimed at restoring growth and strengthening resilience.

“We understand the hardships that Malawi is going through. The World Bank will continue to work with your government to ensure that the economy stabilizes and that livelihoods are improved,” said Diop.

He highlighted ongoing projects in sectors such as agriculture, energy and social protection that are designed to help Malawi recover from recent shocks.

Diop also noted that sustainable progress will depend on strong governance, accountability and collaboration between the government, donors and the private sector.

Development and good governance expert, Wonderful Mkhutche has since commended the discussions, describing them as timely and vital for restoring confidence among Malawi’s development partners.

He argues that the country’s partnership with the World Bank provides a solid foundation for long-term recovery, provided that reforms are effectively implemented.

Both parties expressed optimism that the strengthened cooperation will not only address Malawi’s immediate economic needs but also lay the groundwork for inclusive and sustainable growth in the years ahead.
