°°°°He pledges to revive MCP after election loss

Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, President of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has accepted a request from the Commonwealth Secretary General to mediate political tensions in Tanzania.

He announced this during a detailed press briefing held at the MCP headquarters in Lilongwe today Monday as his first public address since losing the September 16 election.

Chakwera said the ongoing instability in Tanzania, marked by violent demonstrations triggered by contested election results, requires credible intervention.

He confirmed that the Commonwealth approached him because of reputation Malawi for peaceful democratic transitions and his own experience in leadership.

Chakwera stated that he consulted President Arthur Peter Mutharika who endorsed the mission and wished him success as he represents Malawi at a regional level.

He added that President Mutharika encouraged him to approach the task with humility and a commitment to peacebuilding.

Chakwera stressed that the mediation effort is not political work but a humanitarian duty aimed at restoring calm in a neighbouring country.

He said Malawi has a responsibility to contribute to regional stability, given its long standing history of peace.

Turning to domestic matters, Chakwera spoke about the pain MCP supporters continue to feel after the party’s defeat in the September election.

He said the disappointment is understandable but he believes it carries a deeper and spiritual meaning.

According to Chakwera, the suffering is a lesson that God is using to shape the party’s future.

He urged MCP members to resist the temptation to act out of emotion or frustration.

Chakwera cautioned against divisions, internal conflicts, and any behaviour that could tarnish the party’s image.

Instead, he encouraged unity, discipline and a spirit of healing as the party moves forward.

He thanked the 1.7 million Malawians who voted for him, praising them for maintaining peace even after the election results were announced.

Chakwera said the calm displayed by his supporters proves their maturity and commitment to national stability.

He asked MCP members to avoid destructive actions and instead focus on rebuilding their structures and morale.

The MCP leader described the loss as a profound test of the party’s character and resilience.

He said how the party responds to this moment will determine whether Malawians can trust it again.

Chakwera emphasized that MCP must demonstrate unity and vision if it hopes to remain a viable alternative for the country.

He reassured supporters that he remains fully committed to leading the party during this rebuilding period.

“As long as I am your president, I will make sure we get back into government,” Chakwera declared confidently.

He added that MCP’s comeback would require hard work, strategic organisation, and constant engagement with citizens.

Chakwera concluded by saying that both the Tanzania peace mediation and the rebuilding of MCP are spiritual tests that will define their future leadership.

As he prepares to depart for Tanzania, he urged all Malawians to continue upholding peace, unity and hope as the country looks toward the years ahead.

Chakwera and his MCP party booted out of government on 16th September this after losing the elections.
