Man arrested in Nkhata Bay for alleged killing of stepson

Police in Nkhata Bay have arrested 24-year-old Exton Saidi for allegedly killing his 1-year-9-month-old stepson.
According to Nkhata Bay Police Deputy Spokesperson Devoter Mithi, Saidi and his wife had gone to their farm together earlier in the day, leaving the child at home.
Mithi explained that at some point Saidi returned home alone, while his wife remained at the farm.
“When the wife later came back, she found her son submerged in a bucket of water inside the house,” he said.
She immediately reported the incident to Nkhata Bay Police, who visited the scene and took the child to Chikwina Health Centre.
Preliminary medical findings showed bleeding in the child’s mouth caused by a cut, suggesting that a violent act may have occurred.
Mithi added that the child had reportedly been a frequent source of conflict in the couple’s marriage. Saidi comes from Njerenje Village under Traditional Authority Mkaya in Balaka District.
