Police in Salima have arrested 20-year-old Linda Sadalaki for allegedly abandoning her newborn baby boy in a toilet.
The arrest follows the rescue of the infant, who was found last Friday in Chilembwe Village, under Traditional Authority Salima.
According to Salima Police spokesperson Rabecca Ndiwate, officers apprehended Sadalaki after an investigation that led them to Chigombe where she had been hiding.
Ndiwate explained that the suspect attempted to disappear from the community soon after the incident, prompting a police search.
Community members raised the alarm after hearing the baby crying inside the toilet, leading to a quick response that saved the child’s life.
Medical personnel who attended to the baby confirmed that he survived the ordeal and was immediately taken to the district hospital.
Police say Sadalaki, who comes from Kalemba Village, under Traditional Authority Salima, will face charges related to child abandonment.
Authorities have also indicated that social welfare officers will be involved due to the sensitive nature of the case.
Sadalaki is expected to appear in court soon to answer to the charges.
Meanwhile, the baby is still receiving medical care at Salima District Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
