Five behind bars over assault at Nsenjere Trading Centre in Nkhotakota

Police at Nkhunga in Nkhotakota District have arrested five people in connection with the alleged assault of a 35-year-old man, identified as Hastings Gwaza.

The suspects have been named as Saidi Amadi (45), William Masimbi (21), Christina Lojasi (37), Bernard Malizani (59), and Phillip Alifonso (43).

Nkhunga Police publicist Sergeant Andrew Kamanga said the incident occurred on the night of December 11, 2025, at Nsenjere Trading Centre, where both the victim and the suspects were reportedly drinking together.

Kamanga explained that a misunderstanding arose during the drinking session, which later escalated into a physical confrontation that left Gwaza injured.

He said: “The matter was subsequently reported to Nsenjere Police Unit, prompting police to institute investigations into the incident.”

Gwaza is currently receiving medical treatment for the injuries sustained during the assault, according to police.

Meanwhile, two of the suspects have been released on police bail as investigations continue, while the remaining suspects remain in custody.

Police have indicated that all five suspects, who hail from Traditional Authority Kanyenda in Nkhotakota District, will be taken to court soon to answer charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
