Tension ran high in Blantyre on Tuesday 17th December as Malawi Police Service escorted a group of disgruntled suspects linked to the killing of Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) senior doctor, Dr. Victoria Bobe to the deceased’s residence as part of ongoing investigations.
The suspects, including a man identified as Mr. Raphael, are being held in connection with the fatal shooting of Dr. Bobe, a development that has shocked the medical fraternity and the nation at large.
Police said the visit to the late doctor’s home was meant to allow the suspects to reconstruct events and clarify their alleged roles in the crime, in line with investigative procedures.
However, the exercise was met with hostility as some associates of the suspects became visibly angry, resulting in heated verbal exchanges at the scene.
Witnesses reported that emotions flared after allegations surfaced that Mr. Raphael was the one who allegedly carried the firearm used in the shooting that claimed Dr. Bobe’s life.
Police officers on the scene quickly intervened to prevent the situation from escalating further, maintaining order as the suspects were escorted away.
Authorities have confirmed that a total of six suspects are currently in custody in relation to the case, all of whom are being treated as suspects pending court proceedings.
Investigators say the reconstruction exercise is a critical step in piecing together the sequence of events that led to the doctor’s death.
Dr. Bobe, a highly respected senior medical professional at QECH, was fatally shot under circumstances that are still under investigation, sparking widespread grief and condemnation.
The killing has triggered renewed concerns about safety and security for health workers, particularly those serving in high-pressure public institutions.
Police have emphasized that all suspects remain in lawful custody and are being held at a police station as investigations continue.
Authorities have also urged the public to remain calm and allow the law to take its course, warning against speculation and mob reactions that could compromise the case.
Meanwhile, the suspects are expected to appear in court soon, where they will formally answer charges related to the murder.
Police have assured the public that they are handling the matter with utmost professionalism and transparency to ensure justice is served.
As the nation awaits the court process, the case continues to draw national attention, highlighting both the gravity of violent crime and the need for accountability through the justice system.
