The Malawi Coalition for Kabaza Stakeholders and Associations (MACOKASA) is today, 22 December 2025, commemorating Kabaza Day, an event dedicated to promoting the safety, dignity and welfare of motorcycle taxi operators across the country.

The commemoration is taking place from 08:00 AM to 11:50 AM and has brought together kabaza riders, associations, road safety stakeholders and government representatives.

This year’s event is being held under the theme, “Kukumbukira akabaza omwe anavulala, ndi omwe anamwalira pangozi ya pansewu.”

The theme highlights the growing concern over road accidents involving motorcycle taxi operators and the need for stronger safety measures.

Minister of State, Honourable Alfred Gangata, is attending the event as the Guest of Honour, demonstrating government recognition of the role kabaza operators play in the transport sector.

MACOKASA says the event is meant to raise awareness on road safety and encourage responsible riding among motorcycle taxi operators.

The commemoration also serves as a moment of reflection and tribute to kabaza riders who have died or sustained serious injuries while working on the roads.

Organisers are using the platform to call for improved protection, better working conditions, and greater recognition of kabaza operators nationwide.

MACOKASA has emphasized that kabaza riders are key contributors to Malawi’s transport system and economic activity, especially in urban and peri-urban areas.

The central message of the event, “I am a Rider! I am a Human,” underscores the call for respect, safety, and dignity for all motorcycle taxi operators.
