The Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court presided over by Magistrate Bracious Kondowe has informed former Minister of Homeland Security Ezekiel Ching’oma and Gracian Lungu that the state is prosecuting them on charges related to terrorist financing.

Reading out the charge, Magistrate Kondowe stated that the case involves the alleged use of money to facilitate criminal activities intended to cause public disorder.

The court heard that Ezekiel Ching’oma allegedly transferred a total of K3.9 million to an account belonging to Gracian Lungu.

The said account is held with National Bank of Malawi, while the funds were reportedly sent from Ching’oma’s Centenary Bank account.

According to the prosecution, the money was allegedly meant to support activities aimed at destabilising Sylvester Namiwa, who was planning to organise public demonstrations.

Magistrate Kondowe told the court that the alleged offences are believed to have been committed between 9 December 2024 and 7 June 2025.

The state argues that the financial transactions fall under acts prohibited by laws governing terrorist financing and related offences.

Both Ching’oma and Lungu appeared before the court to hear the charges but did not immediately enter pleas.

The court is expected to give directions on bail and the next steps in the matter as investigations continue.

The case has attracted national attention due to the seriousness of the charges and the involvement of a former cabinet minister.
