Police in Blantyre have arrested a 30 year old man in connection with allegations that he has been roasting and selling dog meat at some drinking places in the Makata area of Ndirande Township.

The suspect has been identified as Zakaliya who is currently in police custody as investigations continue into the matter.

Ndirande Police Station spokesperson, Chibisa Mulimbika has confirmed the arrest and provided details surrounding the incident.

Mulimbika said Zakaliya received information that a dog had died at a certain house in the area after which he volunteered to help dispose of the animal.

According to Mulimbika, Zakaliya claimed he would throw the dog away, raising no immediate suspicion among the residents at the time.

Mulimbika, however, said that some people later discovered the suspect skinning the dead dog an act that immediately raised concern.

“When these people questioned him about what he intended to do with the dog, Zakaliya reportedly attempted to flee the scene,’ Mulimbika said.

He said that members of the public gave chase apprehended him and later identified him as the same person who had been roasting meat at some local drinking joints in the area.

Police say the suspect is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges related to the allegations.

Meanwhile, Mulimbika said investigations are ongoing as police work to establish the full extent of the suspect’s activities.
