RECKLESS DRIVER KILLS POLICE OFFICER ON THIRD MAINLAND BRIDGE AS LASTMA MANAGES TRAFFIC

By Olayiwiola Ibrahim // Lagos // The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has expressed deep sorrow over a fatal road accident that occurred today on the Third Mainland Bridge, near Adekunle inward Iyana Oworo.

According to LASTMA, the incident happened when the driver of a Lexus SUV, with registration number EPE 765 JN, rammed into a police officer riding a Bajaj motorcycle on the bridge.

The officer died at the scene. The driver of the Lexus immediately reported himself to the Adekunle Police Division.

On receiving distress alerts, LASTMA officials mobilized to the scene alongside officers of the Nigeria Police Force to manage traffic, secure the area, and begin emergency and preliminary incident procedures.

To prevent further accidents, traffic cones and warning devices were placed around the affected section while police officers commenced documentation and investigation.

Evacuation and recovery operations were also carried out promptly to remove the vehicles and restore normal traffic flow on the bridge.

Despite the severity of the incident, traffic on the axis was effectively managed due to the swift response and coordination of LASTMA officers on ground.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, urged motorists to exercise caution, obey speed limits, and avoid reckless driving that endangers lives.

Road users must adopt responsible driving habits, recognize the value of human life, and comply with traffic laws to curb the rising number of preventable road fatalities in Lagos State, he said.
