NUT Mourns Demise of Teacher Who Died After Attack in Lokoja, Calls for Justice

Kogi State wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers has condoled with the family of late Mariam Usman of Ugbamaka, Okpo District in Olamabo Local Government Area of the state.

Chairman of the Union, Comrade Abayomi Ayoola in his condolence message in Lokoja today described the demise of Mariam a teacher in Private School as unwarranted phenomemun from a society that is fast loosing morality and sound sense of judgement.

Comrade Ayoola urged stakeholders in the educational sector to raise up against intimidation and physical assaults of teachers in the course of discharge of their duties emphasizing that the circumstances leading to her death must not be swept under the carpet.

The Unionist noted that education must always create a platform for a civilized society and act as catalyst for behavioural modification towards positive dimensions noting that the attack meted out on late Mariam in retaliation to the corrective measures issued out to her student indicates a warped system and decline in societal values and respect for education in the country.

He also appealed to authorities at the Brains Mind School not to treat with levity the ugly phenomenon and ensure that justice is achieved to deter other parents from toeing the path of the alledged killers of the teacher.

The NUT Boss who emphasized that the current spate of crime and insecurity cannot be separated from a dysfunctional education system appealed to parents to compliment formal education system with proper upbringing of children at family level which serves as the first learning contact for all human beings.
