Global Citizen Tell World Leaders To Protect Those in Extreme Poverty
Coronavirus cases have surpassed a million worldwide, and now the pandemic is starting to take hold in lower income countries — putting millions more at risk.
Across Europe, China, Iran and the US, thousands have already died. Now, the virus is rapidly spreading into countries without adequate healthcare systems. Recently, the World Economic Forum issued a stark warning: over 900 million of the world’s poorest people are in danger of infection if action is not taken.
Whether you’re born in Melbourne or Lagos — no-one should be left unable to protect themselves from coronavirus. Tell world leaders to take action to protect the world’s poorest communities from COVID-19 this World Health Day.

In Nepal there are just 500 intensive care beds — for a population of 28 million. Nepal is not alone: most lower income countries have limited ways of protecting their citizens from the virus or to treat the sick if COVID-19 takes hold.
The best way to help protect those in extreme poverty is through the work of the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO works in some of the world’s poorest countries to train doctors, strengthen health systems and provide life-saving equipment and hygiene supplies.
But the WHO needs funding to carry out its vital work. Join me in calling on the world’s richest economies to support its work and protect every life against COVID-19 this World Health Day — tweet now.
With hope,
Annabelle and the Global Citizen team.
