BREXIT: Britain and Federal University of Lokoja Highlight Lessons for Nigeria

The British government has reemphasized its determination to sustain its bilateral agreement with Nigeria and Africa despite its exist from the European Union (EU)

British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Paul Thomas Arkwright stated this in a lecture titled; BREXIT, lessons Challenges and opportunities for Nigeria held at the Federal University Lokoja (FUL).

Mr Arkwright who described the exist of Britain from the EU on the 23rd of June last year as the will of the majority of its citizens noted that the British are optimistic about their decision despite the uncertainties tailing their decision.

He explained that Britain has recently itemised its major areas of focus to include, democracy and executing the mandate of the British, creating new relationship with other countries and enduring positive potentials for Nigeria and assured that Britain will sustain its policy of giving 0.7 percent of its gross national income for international development.

According to him, Britain is committed to work with her international partners to sustain its role in the aspect of security and sustaining a safer and healthier planet.

He maintained that the British government has promised to support over five million children in Africa to acquire decent education adding that over thirty three million women will also be giving nutritional support.

While speaking on various challenges confronting Nigeria as a nation, the diplomat urged Nigerians government to strengthen its various  institutions  and embarked on value reorientation to put an end to endemic corruption  that is responsible for its backwardness.

He expressed confidence in the Federal government’s ability to sustain the corporate existence of the nation saying  Britain is not in support of any form of division.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Angela Freeman Miri, expressed appreciation to Mr Arkwright for the visit which  she described as a rare privileged that will remain indelible in the history of the institution.

She expressed the determination of the governing council to relocate the institution to its permanent site and called on stakeholders to assist for the realisation of the dream
