By Erasmus Ikhide// IN the tapestry of history, the measure of a man is not found in the number of years he has lived, but in the indelible marks he leaves upon the institutions he touches.

Today, as Major Matthew Aigbuhenze Iduoriyekemwen marks his diamond jubilee—his 60th birthday—we celebrate a life defined by an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, an instinctive drive for leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the progress of our people.

Sixty years is a miracle. Sixty years of his existence has been a blessing to humanity.

To understand the trajectory of the man we celebrate today, one must journey back to his formative years at the University of Benin. Even as a young student, Matthew did not merely seek academic excellence; he sought to build. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology in the second class upper division, he distinguished himself not just in the classroom but in the arena of student governance.

As the president of the National Association of Zoology Students (Edo State Chapter), he proved early on that he possessed the rare capacity to mobilize his peers toward a common vision.

Perhaps his most telling contribution from those early days remains the founding of the taxidermic museum at the University of Benin—a project that stands as a testament to his foresight and his refusal to accept the status quo.

It was there, amidst the books and the laboratories, that the foundation of his “Major” persona was laid: a man who sees a need, designs a solution, and executes it with precision.

His journey continued through the mandatory National Youth Service Corps in Ibadan, Oyo State, where he experienced the diversity of our national fabric, before he pivoted with characteristic brilliance to pursue a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B Hons) at Ambrose Alli University.

This transition from the sciences to the legal profession was not a departure, but an expansion—a testament to his intellectual versatility and his preparation for the complex demands of public service.

When he stepped into the legislative arena as a member of the Edo State House of Assembly (1999–2007), Major Iduoriyekemwen did not merely occupy a seat; he commanded the chamber.

Throughout his tenure, he was elected the Majority Leader—a position of profound trust that spoke volumes about his ability to foster consensus, steer discourse, and maintain order. Yet, it was his role as the Chairman of the House Committee on State Security that truly defined his legislative legacy.

In that critical capacity, he demonstrated a profound understanding of the sanctity of life and property, treating the security of the populace not as a bureaucratic obligation, but as a sacred duty.

Whether navigating the intricate currents of the private sector, serving as an NDDC Commissioner, or mentoring the next generation of leaders, Major Iduoriyekemwen has carried himself with a quiet, steely resolve.

Major’s 60th birthday is Uhuru because he made it so for others. This is the essence of his legacy. His life has been a bridge—a conduit through which others have found opportunity and stability.

He has spent his decades mentoring, guiding, and fostering resilience, proving that the highest form of success is the elevation of those around you.
As he enters this new chapter, one finds comfort in the knowledge that his best work—and his greatest joys—are likely still ahead.

May the next chapter bring you the same kindness, strength, and laughter you’ve given away for free.
Major, your life is a testament to the fact that service, when married to integrity, creates an enduring legacy.

Today, we celebrate not just the sixty years behind you, but the wisdom, the grace, and the indomitable spirit that you continue to bring to the world.

Happy 60th birthday, Major Matthew Iduoriyekemwen. May your path continue to be lit with the same brilliance you have extended to all of us.
