By Michael Martin//MALAWI

A daring theft attempt at Chipiku Stores in Mangochi has led to the arrest of three women, identified as Daina Thukuwa, 60, Rose Samson, 66, and Lucy Mangani, 64.

According to Mangochi Police Station Public Relations Officer Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi, the suspects entered the store posing as customers on January 2, 2025.

“The trio allegedly concealed stolen items, including three 5-liter gallons of motor vehicle oil, between their thighs and in their bras while wearing oversized clothing.

“A shop attendant grew suspicious after noticing their unusual walking patterns, leading to their apprehension and a subsequent search,” she said.

Daudi added that police records reveal that Thukuwa was convicted of a similar offense in 2022 and served a two-year sentence at Mangochi Prison.

She said: “Samson was arrested last month for shoplifting at another supermarket in Mangochi”

The suspects have been charged with theft, contrary to Section 278 of the Penal Code. They are expected to appear in court once the necessary paperwork is finalized.

Thukuwa hails from Kachikuni Village, Traditional Authority Nsamala, while Samson comes from Mabuka village, Traditional Authority Mkaya in Balaka. Mangani is from Lungucha village, Traditional Authority Machinjiri in Blantyre.
