Police at Jenda in Mzimba have arrested Steve Manda, 33, for impersonating a Malawi Defence Force (MDF) officer and fraudulently stealing money from people.

According to MacFarlane Me for Jenda Police Public Relations Officer, “Manda was arrested on the evening of January 3, 2025, after his girlfriend reported him for duping her out of 1.3 million Malawian kwacha.”

He said Manda allegedly presented himself as an MDF soldier from Moyale barracks and convinced his girlfriend, Annie Nyanda, to believe him.

“He then told her that he had a breakdown in Chikangawa and needed 1.3 million kwacha to fix his vehicle.”

He added that further investigations revealed that Manda had attempted to dupe other women in a similar manner.

“Manda’s tactics also involved pretending to be a police officer, demanding money for police bail from relatives of arrested suspects.

“He boasted that he only steals through technology and by enticing women into falling in love with him, without resorting to breaking into people’s houses.

“Manda has been charged with personating a public officer and fraud other than false pretence, against sections 99 and 319 (A) of the penal code, respectively,” said PRO.

He will appear in court to answer these charges once the necessary paperwork is completed.

Steve Manda hails from Muwanga village, Traditional Authority Mwamulowe in Rumphi district, and currently resides at Chiputula in Mzuzu.
