NGO EQUIPS JOURNALISTS AHEAD OF ELECTIONS
By Michael Martin//MALAWI
In preparation for the upcoming elections, the Centre for Social Concern, a non-governmental organization focused on promoting social justice and human rights, has conducted a two-day training workshop for journalists.
The event, held at the Holiday Motel in Mangochi, aimed to enhance the capacity of journalists to report accurately and objectively on electoral issues.
Malawi is expected to hold elections this year, and the Centre for Social Concern recognizes the critical role journalists play in shaping public opinion and promoting democratic processes.
The organization seeks to promote a free and fair electoral process by empowering journalists with the skills and knowledge necessary to report on electoral issues effectively.
The training workshop, which brought together journalists from various media outlets, focused on topics such as electoral laws, voter education, and conflict-sensitive reporting.
The facilitators emphasized the importance of impartial reporting and the need for journalists to refrain from spreading misinformation.
Tobias Jere, a programme officer at the Centre for Social Concern, urged journalists to remain committed to their profession and to report accurately on electoral issues.
He emphasized that the organization’s goal is to ensure that journalists are equipped to perform their duties effectively, thereby contributing to a peaceful and credible electoral process.
The journalists who attended the workshop expressed gratitude to the Centre for Social Concern for organizing the event.
They acknowledged the importance of their role in promoting democratic processes and pledged to apply the skills and knowledge acquired during the workshop in their reporting.
