SUBOMI OKOYA APOLOGIZES FOR NAIRA ABUSE, CLAIMS LACK OF KNOWLEDGE ON CONSEQUENCES

By Olayiwola Ibrahim // Subomi Okoya, son of billionaire businessman Razaq Okoya, has issued a public apology to the Nigeria Police and Nigerians for abusing the naira.
This comes after a viral video showed him and his brother Wahab spraying naira notes while a policeman attached to them held stacks of the currency ¹.
The incident sparked outrage, and the policeman involved has been detained for disciplinary action.
Subomi claimed he wasn’t fully aware of the consequences of his actions, which violate Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.
This law prohibits the abuse of the nation’s currency, and spraying or mishandling naira notes is a punishable offense.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time someone has been punished for abusing the naira.
In 2024, popular socialite Bobrisky was imprisoned for a similar violation.
Subomi’s apology seems to be an attempt to mitigate the situation, but it remains to be seen how the authorities will handle the case.
