FEDOMA DECRIES LACK OF FUNDING FOR DISABILITY MOVEMENT
By Michael Martin//MALAWI
Federation of Disability Organizations in Malawi (FEDOMA), has expressed its disappointment over the inadequate allocation of funds to the disability movement.
Speaking during the 2025/26 pre budget consultation meeting held on Friday 17th January 2025 at Mount Sochi Hotel in Blantyre, Simon Munde, Executive Director for FEDOMA said that despite government’s efforts to promote inclusive development, people with disabilities continue to face significant barriers in accessing opportunities in farming, business, health and other areas.
Munde emphasized that the low budget allocation to the Disability Trust Fund and the National Initiative for Economic Empowerment (NEEF) is a major concern.
He added that the lack of consideration for people with disabilities in social cash transfer programs is a stark reminder of the challenges they face.
“As Malawi strives to achieve Vision 2063, which emphasizes leaving no one behind, the government must prioritize the inclusion of people with disabilities in development projects,” he said.
FEDOMA is advocating for increased funding and support to ensure that individuals with disabilities have equal access to opportunities and resources.
The Disability Trust Fund and NEEF require adequate funding to support initiatives that promote economic empowerment and inclusion. Lack of consideration in social cash transfer programs. People with disabilities must be included in social cash transfer programs to ensure they receive the support they need.”
FEDOMA is calling on the government to prioritize the inclusion of people with disabilities in development projects.
As Malawi works towards achieving Vision 2063, it is essential that the government prioritizes the needs of people with disabilities.
