MINISTRY LAUNCHES INCLUSIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMME

Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has officially launched the inclusive education programme at Linthipe Community Day Secondary School in Dedza on Thursday.

The launch was held under the theme, ‘Breaking barriers to inclusive education and safe education by providing relevant and quality education to all learners with disabilities’.

The Inclusive Education Programme in Malawi, funded by the Scottish government, seeks to ensure equitable access to quality education for all children. This includes a focus on supporting those with disabilities and marginalised groups. It will also train teachers to implement inclusive practices and create supportive environments for diverse learning needs.

Speaking at the Launch while standing in for the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Patricia Kainga Nangozo said that inclusive education is essential for fostering a more equitable society. She emphasised that it does not only benefit children with disabilities but enriches the learning experience for all students, adding by embracing diversity in our schools, we create a future where every child can succeed.

“Inclusive education is a fundamental right that empowers our children and strengthens our communities. Together, we must ensure that no child is left behind and that every learner has the opportunity to reach their full potential,” she said.

Deputy Director of Inclusive Education, Lucy Magagula, said that fostering an inclusive environment is essential for the success of all students.

She emphasised that collaboration among educators, parents, and the community is vital to achieve this goal.

“The launch of the inclusive education program marks a significant step towards fostering a more equitable and supportive learning environment for all students,” Magagula said.

Speaking earlier, Country Director for Oxfam, Lingalileni Mihowa said that the launch marks a significant step in ensuring that every child, regardless of their background or abilities, has access to quality education.

“Together, we can create inclusive learning environments that empower all students to thrive,” she emphasised.

The event was also graced by other senior officials from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education as well as Ministry of Higher Education namely, the Deputy Director of Teacher Education and Development Madame Rose Kalizang’oma, Deputy Director of School Health Nutrition HIV/AIDS, Madam Maureen Maguza Tembo Acting Director of Secondary Education, Samuel Chibwana and Deputy Director of Higher Education, Dr Valentino Zimpita.
