Malawi is making significant progress in improving early grade learning, particularly in mathematics, as part of its broader commitment to quality education and the long term Malawi 2063 (MW2063) vision.
Minister of Higher Education, Honourable Dr. Jessie Kabwila made the remarks on Thursday while representing the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Honourable Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima, at a special session of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) meeting of education ministers.
The session focused on enhancing foundational skills in reading, writing, and mathematics across the region.
“Malawi has reformed how mathematics is taught in Standards 1 to 4. More than 2.2 million learners in Standards 1 and 2 across all schools, as well as learners in Standards 3 and 4 in selected pilot schools, are now learning through a new and improved mathematics curriculum,” Kabwila announced.
She noted that the government has trained over 30,000 teachers to effectively deliver the new approach to mathematics education.
Dr. Kabwila is participating in the ministerial session of the SADC Council of Ministers of Education and Training, Science, Technology and Innovation, following two days of meetings by senior education officials.
The session will conclude with the adoption of a ministerial record outlining key decisions and implementation strategies for member states.
The Minister reaffirmed Malawi’s commitment to regional collaboration in advancing foundational learning, which she described as crucial for achieving long-term educational and developmental goals.
In addition, more than 4.7 million learner workbooks and teacher guides have been distributed, ensuring that both teachers and students have access to appropriate learning materials every term.
