Relentless Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) says it has no immediate plans to organise demonstrations in response to the socio-economic challenges Malawians are currently facing.

Speaking in Lilongwe during media address on Saturday, HRDC president, Michael Kaiyatsa explained that although the nation is grappling with issues such as fuel scarcity, they trust the government will act swiftly.

Kayiyatsa acknowledged the seriousness of the challenges but said protests are not the coalition’s current focus.

He expressed hope that the DPP-led government will urgently address the concerns raised by citizens.

The HRDC leadership also clarified the organisation’s stance on political neutrality.

Kayiyatsa firmly dismissed claims that the coalition supports any particular political party.

He emphasised that HRDC remains committed to its mandate of promoting and defending human rights.

The HRDC chairperson also condemned threats directed at human rights defenders in the country.

He noted that many of these threats are being issued online.

According to Kayiyatsa, such behaviour undermines Malawi’s democratic principles.

The coalition called for an end to intimidation and harassment targeting activists.

During the briefing, Kayiyatsa announced a new support initiative for human rights defenders.

He said HRDC has introduced a grant that will provide legal, security and other forms of assistance to defenders who have faced physical or non-physical attacks.
