The Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA) has elected Blantyre City Mayor Isaac Jomo Osman as its new president following a closely watched election involving mayors and council chairpersons from across the country.

The election took place on Thursday in Lilongwe during MALGA’s Extraordinary General Assembly where leaders of various city and district councils cast their votes to choose the association’s new leadership.

Osman emerged victorious with an overwhelming 34 votes defeating Nkhatabay District Council Chairperson Hannock Kachingwe who garnered two votes.

Speaking after his election, Osman said he is ready to serve the association with dedication and commitment, pledging to work tirelessly in advancing the interests of local authorities and strengthening local governance in Malawi.

Meanwhile, Ntchisi District Council Chairperson Maloto Chimkombero was elected Vice President of MALGA after running unopposed.

The Malawi Local Government Association is a key umbrella body representing local councils in Malawi, playing a vital role in advocating for decentralisation, good governance, and improved service delivery at local government level.
