President Tinubu Urges Senate to Amend the Constitution for State Police
Wuddeama Manga/ABUJA// President Bola Tinubu has formally asked the National Assembly to commence the constitutional amendment process that would pave the way for the creation of state police, as part of broader efforts to confront Nigeria’s worsening security situation.
The President made the request on Wednesday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, during an interfaith Iftar with members of the Senate.
Describing the country as “extremely challenged” by terrorism, banditry and insurgency, Tinubu said amending the Constitution to allow state police has become necessary to strengthen internal security and reclaim ungoverned spaces.
“What I am asking for tonight is for you to start thinking how best to amend the constitution to incorporate the state police for us to secure our country, take over our forests from marauders, free our children from fear,” the President stated.
Tinubu also applauded senators for what he described as their consistent backing in tackling security issues, assuring them that he values their partnership.
“You never fail to make the right response to these calls. All the critical support that I’ve enjoyed, I promise that I will continue to enjoy it and will not take you for granted,” Tinubu said.
The latest appeal comes just three days after the President made a similar commitment to state governors during an Iftar dinner on Monday, where he assured them that the establishment of state police would not be delayed.
During that engagement, Tinubu had declared, “What I promise you is not to be postponed. We will establish state police to combat insecurity.”
Advocacy for the creation of state police has continued to gather momentum across the country, with governors, traditional rulers and security experts increasingly supporting it as a viable response to Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.
