AREWA REVIVAL PROJECT DEFENDS THE INTEGRITY OF THE NIGERIAN SENATE OVER UN DELEGATION CONTROVERSY
By Olayiwola Ibrahim // The Arewa Revival Project has observed with concern the recent media controversy surrounding the removal of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Senator representing Kogi Central, from Nigeria’s delegation to the United Nations summit as reported by sections of the media.
While public scrutiny is an important pillar of democracy, it is necessary to place the facts in proper perspective and defend the integrity of the Nigerian Senate as an institution of national importance.
The decision regarding the composition of Nigeria’s delegation to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women summit is an administrative matter handled through established parliamentary procedures and government coordination.
Delegations to international events are often determined based on committee responsibilities, available representation slots, and official nominations by Senate leadership and relevant authorities.
It is therefore misleading and unfair to portray such administrative decisions as an attack on any individual senator.
The Nigerian Senate, under the leadership of Godswill Akpabio, operates within the framework of constitutional provisions, legislative rules, and institutional discipline.
The Arewa Revival Project strongly cautions against attempts by certain political actors and commentators to politicize routine legislative administrative matters in a manner that could undermine public confidence in the National Assembly.
We must also remind Nigerians that international parliamentary delegations are not personal entitlements but official representations determined by institutional priorities.
No senator should attempt to frame such decisions as victimization or discrimination without credible evidence.
The Nigerian Senate remains one of the most important democratic institutions safeguarding Nigeria’s constitutional order.
Public discourse must therefore be conducted responsibly and with respect for institutional processes.
The Arewa Revival Project calls on political leaders, civil society actors, and the media to avoid sensationalism and instead promote constructive engagement that strengthens democratic governance.
Nigeria’s democracy will only grow stronger when institutions are respected, due process is upheld, and national interest is placed above personal or political ambitions.
