As Nigeria marks 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule, the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) has released an official statement on the state of our democracy. Motunrayo Alaka, the center coordinator stated this in a statement made available to SECURITY MONITOR.
The center noted that amidst rising insecurity, economic hardships, and a historic low in voter participation (26.72% in 2023), WSCIJ calls on all levels of government to prioritise the lives, welfare, and constitutional freedoms of Nigerians.
“We also call on citizens, the media, and all other relevant stakeholders to play their respective roles in nation building.  Beyond periodic voting and speeches, democracy must deliver tangible justice and dignity”. Alaka said.
