INEC Will Halt Senator Melaye’s Recall If…’ -Kogi INEC Boss,Prof Apam
By Ola Simon,LOKOJA/Kogi state indigene have been urged to be politically active by getting themselves registered in the ongoing voters registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The Resident Electoral Commissioner For the State, Professor James Apam gave the advice in an interview with newsmen in Lokoja.
Professor Apam who described the level of participation by the people as impressive emphasized that those who just reached eighteen years, those who have not registered at all as well as those who wish to transfer their voters card from one state to another can do so at the INEC’s designated areas.
His words” I think the level of compliance has been impressive even as prospective voters have their own problems too. We started from registering people and transferring people’s voting points at the local government headquarters and we now move to the point where we created additional centres. Now we move further to a point where we are now going round the council wards to attend to request of people who have not been reached. This will continue sixty days prior to the election.”
He urged the people of the state to utilize the privilege to fulfill their civic right by voting candidate of their choice in the next election.
Professor Apam assured that INEC will continue its advocacy on voters education noting that issues of under age voting and double registration can lead to the cancellation of the voters card and as well attract legal action.
He disclosed that the commission as from May will start issuing out the voters card of those who registered last year.
On Melaye’s recall, Professor Apam said a stakeholder meeting will be held this month in connection to the recall process which will commence on the 28th of April.
He said the commission will start with the verification of the signatories to the petition to the recall process.
He however emphasized that INEC will halt the process if directed by Supreme Court.
