JOURNALISM INTEGRITY CRISIS: A CALL FOR ACTION FOR NIGERIA’S MEDIA

As a journalist with Security Monitor News, I, Olayiwola Ibrahim, am compelled to sound the alarm on the precarious state of journalism in Nigeria.
The recent trend of journalists prioritizing political agendas and financial gain over objective reporting is concerning.
This shift compromises the integrity of journalism, undermining its core purpose: to inform and empower the public.
Journalism should be a beacon of truth, holding those in power accountable and giving voice to the marginalized.
However, when journalists are swayed by external influences, the narrative becomes distorted, and the public’s trust is eroded.
The brown envelope syndrome where journalists are bribed to publish favorable stories must be abolished.
Instead, we should portray members of the press as tools of change, dedicated to upholding the principles of fairness, accuracy, and transparency.
I urge President Tinubu to address the nation on the brutality faced by members of the press, particularly at the hands of the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Army.
Journalists should be able to carry out their duties without fear of harassment, intimidation, or violence.
The legacy we leave for upcoming journalists should be one of integrity, courage, and commitment to the truth. We must work together to create an environment where journalism can thrive, and the public can trust the information they receive.
In order to restore the integrity of journalism, it’s essential to prioritize on the following below.
Working on adequate objectives by reporting facts without bias or agenda.
Working on adequate accountability to hold power to account, not serve personal or political interests.
Working on good a transparency reforms to Disclose conflicts of interest and maintain editorial independence.
By upholding these principles, journalists can rebuild trust and fulfill their vital role in society.
I call on all stakeholders to join me in this crusade for a better, more responsible journalism.
