By Olayiwola Ibrahim // The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has commissioned a new modern canine complex built and donated by the German government.
The facility was commissioned by the Chairman/CEO of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), on Friday, September 26, 2025, in Ikeja, Lagos.
Marwa stated that the donation will significantly drive the agency’s fight against illicit drugs and secure the future of the nation.
He commended the German government for its numerous supports to NDLEA, which have translated into excellent performance by the Canine Unit.
Marwa cited the remarkable seizure of 74.119kg of captagon at the Apapa seaport in Lagos in 2021 as a striking example of successful operations aided by sniffer dogs.
He noted that the new facility will provide a comfortable and dignified environment for Canine Unit personnel to discharge their duties effectively.
Marwa emphasized the critical role of sniffer dogs in drug interdiction, using their heightened sense of smell to identify and detect concealed narcotic substances.
He noted that the sniffer dogs have been instrumental to the seizure of over 17.932 metric tonnes of various illicit substances since their deployment.
The German Consul General, Mr. Daniel Krull, said the success of NDLEA’s operation is not only helping to keep Nigeria safe but also of great benefit to Germany.
He commended the agency’s leadership and staff for their trust and cooperation with German partners.
The deputy head of section IZ14 BKA, Berlin, Mr. Florian Bulow, said the support for NDLEA is one of the longest-reaching projects the BKA has done in police capacity building.
He emphasized the importance of trust, shared goals, and teamwork in achieving success in the fight against drug smuggling and abuse.
