Edo guber poll: INEC begins training of police
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun the training of policemen across the three Senatorial Districts of Edo, ahead of the Sept.10 governorship election.
Mrs Priscillia Sule, the Public Relations Officer of the commission in the state, said on Wednesday in Benin that the training was organised by the Inter-party Consultative Committee on Election and Security (ICCES).
Sule said the exercise was being carried out in collaboration with the police.
According to her, ten policemen, who are being trained in each of the 18 Local Government Areas of the state, are expected to train others too.
Sule said that the exercise was to ensure safety, free, fair and credible election.
Recall that INEC had deployed 18,511 personnel for the conduct of Sept. 10 governorship election in Edo state.
The number, according to the commission would comprise one Returning Officer; 18 Local Government Area Collation Officers; 192 Registration Area Collation Officers; and 263 Supervisory Presiding Officers.
The personnel deployed also include 2,627 Presiding Officers 12,036 Assistant Presiding Officers (APOs) I, II and III; 2,530 Assistant Presiding Officers (VP); and 728 Reserve APOs (5%).
Others were 19 LGA Supervisors with one Headquarters Reserve; and 97 RA Cluster Supervisors as well with one headquarters Reserve (2RAs/Supervisor).
Edo state with 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs), has a total of 1,925,105 registered voters; 192 Registration Areas (RAs);2,627 Polling Units (Pus); and4,011 Voting Points (VPs).
There are two major contenders for the post of governor in the state.
They are messrs Godwin Obaseki of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and Pastor Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
