A 36-year-old man, Chizindikilo Makalani, is in police custody in Ntchisi district for allegedly possessing 15 bags of maize suspected to have been illegally acquired.
Sub Inspector Salomy Zganbo for Ntchisi Police Public Relations Officer confirmed the arrest and commended the public for providing valuable information that led to the arrest.
She said on January 2, 2025, police received a tip-off that some vendors at Kamsonga Trading Centre in Traditional Authority Malenga were buying maize from the Admarc depot at a subsidized price and reselling it to other businessmen at a higher price.
“Upon investigation, police found Makalani behind the Admarc shade with an unregistered digital scale, buying maize from individuals at K1000 per kilogram.
“Initially, people were buying the same maize at K790 per kilogram at the Admarc depot and selling it behind the shade, making a profit of K210 per kilogram instantly. Makalani was arrested and found with 15 bags of 50kg maize, which have been seized.”
Makalani, who hails from Chitedzi Village in the area of Traditional Authority Malenga in Ntchisi, will appear in court as soon as investigations are concluded.
