SUPREME COURT JUDGMENT NULLIFIES ABURE’S AUTHORITY, LABOUR PARTY LEADERSHIP CLARIFIES

By Adamu Aliyu Aliyu/ABUJA//
The leadership of the Labour Party, under the duly recognized National working committee (NWC), wishes to address the general public and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding misleading claims made by Mr. Abure and his group concerning an alleged illegal governorship primary in Anambra State. We categorically state that these claims are baseless, devoid of truth, and should be disregarded by all stakeholders.
Our position is anchored on the Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, which unequivocally vacated and set aside the orders of the Federal High Court and Court of Appeal that had previously recognized Mr. Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party. This landmark ruling stripped Mr. Abure of any legal authority to act on behalf of the party, effectively nullifying his leadership status.
Consequently, the Labour Party, in compliance with legal requirements, appointed Sen. Esther Nenadi Usman as National Chairman and Sen. Darlington Nwokocha as National Secretary. This development has overridden any purported authority previously claimed by Abure and his associates.
In light of this, any attempt by Mr. Abure or his private staff to conduct primaries, submit candidate names to INEC, or direct the affairs of the Labour Party is an exercise in futility and a violation of the Supreme Court’s decision. The judgment is clear: Mr. Abure ceased to be the National Chairman as of April 4, 2025, and lacks the legitimacy to represent or act for the party in any capacity. We are confident that INEC, having been served with the certified true copy of the Supreme Court judgment—as it was a party to the case—will uphold the rule of law and reject any submissions or actions emanating from Abure’s faction.
We wish to correct the erroneous narrative propagated by Abure and his co-travelers, which claims that the legitimate National working committee led by Sen. Esther Nenadi Usman is conducting an illegal primary in Anambra.
This is a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and sow confusion within the party. The Supreme Court’s decision is binding, and any actions taken by Abure’s faction post-judgment are null and void. We urge party members, supporters, and the general public to disregard these unfounded assertions and continue the Labour Party rebuilding process under the legitimate leadership of Sen. Esther Nenadi Usman.
The Supreme Court gave a judgment that took away Abure’s authority to act or submit any name to INEC, so there’s no way Abure can attempt to submit Name to INEC as Labour Party Anambra Governorship CANDIDATE, and INEC will not accept it.
The Labour Party remains committed to upholding democratic principles and the rule of law. We call on INEC to act in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directive and ensure that only actions from the recognized leadership of the party are given effect.
We also appeal to our members and the electorate in Anambra State to remain steadfast as we work toward a credible and lawful process for the upcoming governorship election on November 8, 2025.
