Accountability Must Prevail — Benue’s Security Crisis Demands Action

By Dr. Jeffrey Kuraun//
The ongoing violence and insecurity in Benue State are not just tragic; they are a call to action that cannot be ignored. With substantial resources at its disposal, the state government must rise to the occasion, delivering more than mere expressions of sympathy or empty condemnations. The situation in Benue requires decisive and responsible leadership that prioritizes the safety of its citizens. It is unacceptable for the state to endure preventable bloodshed while receiving the largest monthly security allocation in Nigeria.
The funds allocated for security must yield tangible results. With over ₦3 billion received monthly, one must question why communities remain vulnerable to attacks. These security votes, intended for operational intelligence, local law enforcement, and community policing, must translate into genuine safety improvements. If they do not, it raises serious concerns about how these funds are being utilized.
Blame-shifting is not an option. While it might be tempting to point fingers at federal agencies or previous administrations, the primary responsibility lies with those currently in power in Benue. True leadership involves proactive measures, not waiting for assistance from Abuja or external sources. Excuses will not suffice; action is imperative.
A coordinated local response is essential. This includes adequately training and equipping community policing units, engaging traditional leaders and vigilante groups, and conducting public audits of security spending. Such steps will help restore public trust and ensure that funds are not misappropriated. Furthermore, collaborations with federal security forces must focus on accountability rather than competition.
Transparency is crucial in this endeavor. The people of Benue deserve clarity regarding the expenditure of their security votes. They have every right to question the impact of ₦3 billion each month. It is time to move away from opaque spending practices towards measurable outcomes that genuinely enhance security.
Benue is more than just a budget line; it is home to millions whose lives depend on effective governance. With the largest security allocation in the nation, the state government must take the lead in addressing this crisis with courage and accountability. The lives of its citizens must take precedence over political maneuvering, and inaction is no longer an acceptable option.
