By Morris Nor// The Nigeria Police Force is set for a transformative overhaul following the passage of two landmark bills by the National Assembly, a move described by the Force leadership as a historic step towards a more professional and robust policing institution.

The Police Institutes Establishment Bill and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Amendment) Bill, 2025 have been passed into law, creating a comprehensive legal framework aimed at tackling decades-long challenges in training, funding, and officer welfare.

CSP Benjamin Hundeyin , the Force Public Relations Officer in a statement stated that the legislations will usher in far-reaching changes designed to build a modern, accountable, and well-equipped police institution capable of meeting the security demands of the nation.

The two new Acts address core deficiencies that have historically limited the NPF’s effectiveness, the Police Institutes Establishment Act, focuses on the foundational element of policingaining, it provides for the consolidation and modernization of all police training and research institutions across Nigeria.

The Act mandates that training curricula are updated to reflect global best practices in areas like investigation, technology, leadership, and community policing, it ensures that officers are better prepared for the complexities of modern law enforcement.

On the other hand, the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Amendment) Act tackles the critical issue of sustainable funding, it strengthens the financial and administrative structure of the Trust Fund, ensuring greater transparency and accountability. The amendment guarantees consistent funding for operations, state-of-the-art equipment, advanced training, and, crucially, improved welfare packages for personnel.

A key component of the new legal framework is its strong emphasis on officer welfare. The reforms provide for improved conditions of service, enhanced health and insurance benefits, and better housing and career development opportunities. This focus is expected to boost morale, inspire higher ethical standards, and foster a new culture of professionalism within the ranks.

Meanwhile ,the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, commended the National Assembly for its patriotic commitment in passing the bills.

He also expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for assenting to them, calling the move a strong demonstration of the administration’s resolve to modernize and professionalize policing in Nigeria.

The IGP assured Nigerians that the Force will redouble its efforts to elevate training standards and consolidate ongoing reforms.

With this renewed legal backbone, the Nigeria Police Force enters a new chapter, poised to deliver more efficient, accountable, and citizen-focused policing services across the country.
