Kaumba urges government to reintroduce key subsidies and reform CDF management

Umodzi Party President Thomas Kaumba has appealed to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government to adopt a universal fertilizer subsidy as part of efforts to combat Malawi’s recurring hunger crisis.
Speaking during the media address in Blantyre, Kaumba argued that hunger remains a national challenge and that only a comprehensive fertilizer subsidy can ensure farmers across the country have adequate access to essential farm inputs.
He stressed that previous targeted programs have left many households unsupported, worsening food insecurity in both rural and urban areas.
The Umodzi Party leader noted that Malawi’s economy relies heavily on agriculture, making it vital for government to prioritize policies that boost food production.
Kaumba also called for the reinstatement of the Government-to-Government (G2G) fuel procurement arrangement which he said is more efficient and cost-effective.
He criticized the current open tender procurement system, saying it has increased costs while failing to guarantee steady fuel supplies nationwide.
According to Kaumba, persistent fuel shortages have hindered economic activities and burdened consumers with rising transportation costs.
He emphasized that returning to G2G deals would help stabilize the fuel market and reduce unnecessary procurement expenses.
In addition, Kaumba proposed that the administration of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) be transferred from Members of Parliament to ward councillors.
He argued that councillors are closer to the people and better positioned to ensure transparency and community-driven development.
Kaumba believes this shift would prevent misuse of funds and ensure that projects truly reflect the needs of local residents.
He made these remarks during a press briefing held at his residence in Manyowe, Blantyre, where he reiterated his party’s commitment to promoting accountability and improving service delivery.
