BENIN REPUBLIC’S COUP ATTEMPT FOILED, GOVERNMENT REGAINS CONTROL
By Olayiwola IbrAmin // Benin Republic’s Interior Minister, Alassane Seidou, has announced that the country’s armed forces have thwarted a coup attempt led by a group of soldiers.
The coup plotters, who called themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, had announced the removal of President Patrice Talon and the dissolution of the government on state television.
According to Seidou, the coup attempt was launched early on Sunday, December 7, 2025, with the aim of destabilizing the state and its institutions.
However, the Beninese Armed Forces and their leadership remained committed to the republic and foiled the attempt.
The government has urged the population to go about their business as usual, and the situation is reported to be under control.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) have condemned the coup attempt.
President Talon, who has been in power since 2016, is due to step down next April after the presidential election
His party’s candidate, former Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, is seen as the favorite to win the election.
