The Government says it is targeting the opening of Mombera University and the enrollment of the first students by the end of 2027.
Second Vice President Enock Chihana described the project as a defining pillar of the current administration’s legacy.
Chihana made the remarks on Monday 22nd December 2025 during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held in Mzimba District that convened to chart strategies for accelerating the long delayed construction of the University.
The university project was originally initiated by the late President Bingu wa Mutharika and despite its importance, the project has experienced years of delays under successive administrations.
Chihana said the Government is now determined to break the cycle of delays.
He said a tight implementation timetable has been adopted to ensure completion within the current political term.
According to Chihana, the university remains close to the heart of President Arthur Peter Mutharika.
He added that his appointment as Second Vice President was partly aimed at fast tracking the Mombera University project.
Chihana emphasized that higher education remains a priority for national development.
He said Mombera University will play a critical role in expanding access to tertiary education in the northern region.
During the meeting, Chihana directed officials to develop new architectural designs and updated implementation plans.
He said the designs must reflect modern standards and global best practices in higher education.
Chihana stressed that the university should be developed into a world-class learning institution.
In his remarks, Minister of Education, Science and Technology Bright Msaka said Mombera University will host a range of academic faculties.
He highlighted animal science as one of the key faculties planned for the institution.
Msaka further revealed that specialised faculties such as geology and mineral exploration will be introduced.
He said these programmes are critical to supporting Malawi’s development agenda.
Msaka noted that the country needs skilled professionals in science, technology, and natural resource management.
Traditional leaders were also represented at the meeting.
Paramount Chief M’mbelwa V welcomed the renewed commitment from Government.
However, he urged authorities to translate promises into concrete action.
The chief noted that previous administrations had made similar commitments without completing the project.
He said communities around Mzimba have waited for too long to see the university become a reality.
Members of the private sector also attended the stakeholders’ meeting.
In his remarks, NICO Holdings Group, Managing Director Vizenge Kumwenda said investors are ready and willing to partner with Government.
He emphasized the importance of a win-win partnership in developing the university.
Kumwenda said private sector involvement can speed up construction and reduce the financial burden on Government.
Earlier, Chihana conducted a site visit to assess the current state of construction works.
He said Government expects the first intake of students to begin learning in 2027.
Chihana reaffirmed his personal commitment to overseeing the completion of the project.
He concluded by saying Mombera University will stand as a lasting symbol of progress, education, and national development.
