I Never Harassed Any Woman” – Akpabio Reacts to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Sexual Harassment Allegations

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed allegations of sexual harassment made against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, calling the claims baseless.
Addressing the issue during Wednesday’s plenary session, Akpabio stated, “At no time did I ever harass any woman. I was raised by my late single mother and have always upheld respect for women.” He also referenced his past recognition as the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria.
The allegations surfaced amid political tensions, with Akpoti-Uduaghan’s supporters clashing with security operatives at the National Assembly while demanding Akpabio’s resignation.
Shortly after Akpabio’s remarks, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan formally raised a petition under Order 40, accusing the Senate President of sexual harassment and abuse of office. She requested permission to present evidence before the chamber, prompting the Senate to refer the matter to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct for investigation.
The controversy follows a February dispute over seat arrangements, which escalated into a confrontation between the two lawmakers. On Wednesday, Akpoti-Uduaghan, accompanied by her husband, took her newly assigned seat but refused to stand upon Akpabio’s arrival, deviating from the customary protocol of showing respect for the presiding officer.
The case has further fueled tensions within the Senate, raising concerns about decorum and conduct in the legislative body.
