Lagos State Unveils Africa’s First AI-Centric Feature Film, Makemation

The Lagos State Government has announced the release of Makemation, Africa’s first feature film centered on artificial intelligence (AI) and technology.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a statement on Sunday, revealed that the groundbreaking film will premiere in cinemas across Nigeria on Easter Weekend, April 18, 2025.
“Makemation highlights the rising impact of African youth, particularly girls, showcasing how they leverage AI and technological innovations to tackle some of the continent’s most pressing challenges,” the statement read.
The coming-of-age drama follows a young girl from a low-income community in Lagos who, despite numerous obstacles, remains brilliant, determined, and unstoppable. The film blends entertainment with a powerful message of hope, illustrating how innovation can transform poverty from an enduring crisis into a challenge of the past.
Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering creativity and innovation, emphasizing the vital role of the creative industry in economic growth.
“We have consistently prioritized the growth of our creative sector, recognizing its potential to drive economic progress and position Lagos as a leading hub for the arts in Africa. Supporting initiatives like this promotes our talented filmmakers and highlights technology’s role in storytelling,” he wrote on his X handle.
