DPO UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR ALLEGED ABUSE OF POWER IN LAGOS
By Olayiwiola Ibrahim // Lagos // The Lagos State Police Command has begun an investigation into the behavior of CSP Ayanwale Ayodeji, the Divisional Police Officer at Olosan Police Station in Mushin, due to allegations of abuse of power and intimidation that have gone viral.
The situation escalated on Tuesday when a social media user, Akin Akinwale, known as #mrlurvy on X (formerly Twitter), expressed concerns about how his friend was treated by the DPO.
According to Akinwale, the incident was sparked by a minor traffic accident where his friend’s car lightly brushed against another vehicle belonging to a friend of the DPO.
Despite the motorist’s immediate offer to cover the damages, Akinwale claimed that CSP Ayodeji threatened his friend with imprisonment, leveraging his authority.
He wrote, the DPO of Olosan Police Station in Mushin, CSP Ayanwale Ayodeji, is threatening to jail my friend.
He brazenly told him to call anyone he knows, insisting that he would ensure my friend rots in jail.
His crime: My friend’s car brushed against the car of someone who is a friend of the DPO.
Even though my friend quickly offered to repair the damage, the DPO and his friend are now abusing their power, insisting they will imprison him regardless.
The saddest part is the DPO stating that even if the Inspector-General of Police intervenes, he would not listen. This is a clear misuse of power.
In response to the post, the Police Complaint Response Unit provided an update, stating that the accident occurred on January 19 near Oye roundabout towards Ilasa, Mushin.
The fact is that Ishola Wasiu was driving his Acura MDX with registration number KSF 615 JN along Oye Street towards Ilasa.
He reported that while driving, he swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle and hit a blue Peugeot 306 parked along the road.
This is the basis of the report,” the post stated.
It also mentioned that both parties were brought to the station, their statements were taken, and they were advised to seek an amicable resolution.
After hours of discussions, they were unable to reach an agreement, it added.
While the motorist’s side claims threats and a refusal to heed even the IGP, the PoliceCRU update suggests that the DPO has intervened to see if an alternative resolution can be found.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, also commented on the viral post, confirming that the Command is currently investigating the complaint.
